If you’ve ever looked at your kid and thought “I’d quite like you to become my adventure buddy one day”, there’s a very decent Father’s Day offer waiting for you further down the email from this weeks sponsor, Kids Ride Shotgun.
I hereby enclose a selection of treats found during the last month of interweb wandering; covering fatherhood, adventure, childhood, screens and the general weirdness of modern life. INSPIRATION
Camping through a child’s eyes
I stumbled across these moving portraits by Australian cinematographer Stefan Jose, filmed on a camping trip with a mate and their kids, and ended up watching every single one. Watching children this closely feels almost intrusive, like we’ve been granted access to a world adults are normally too busy to notice. When I silence the noise to properly observe my own kids, I very quickly remember what actually matters.

Will the Social Media Ban Work?
This week’s ban creates something we’ve been missing for years: a shared understanding of where the line is (until now, parents have largely been left to draw that line themselves). The biggest beneficiaries won’t be today’s teenagers, but the generation growing up behind them who inherit a world where “you get social media at 16” feels as normal as “you learn to drive at 17”. This piece in the Spectator acknowledges some uncomfortable truths about whether the ban will actually work…
FILM
Emil & Karl: Small Wheels, Big Mountains
I thoroughly enjoyed this film about two dads bikepacking across Switzerland with their toddlers, mainly because it captures the central tension of family adventure: adults want to get somewhere but children don’t give a toss and want to lob rocks into a stream instead. The magic happens when the dads surrender to it all and realise it was never really about riding through the mountains, but experiencing them at 3mph through the eyes of a child.
GEAR
Kids Ride Shotgun
I’ve always thought one of the great parenting hacks is convincing your kids that your hobbies are actually their hobbies. Mountain biking is a classic example. Kids Ride Shotgun make a seat that sticks your kid on the front of your bike so they can join the ride from a young age. Their flagship model is the Shotgun Pro Combo; a premium front-mounted seat for kids aged 2-5.
For Father’s Day they’re chucking in 40% off their Uplift Balance Bike Backpack when you buy any Shotgun Seat Combo, so it you’re keen to raise a future riding buddy, this is worth a butchers.
BOOK
The New Fatherhood
Kevin Maguire’s new book asks a question many dads wrestle with: if we’re no longer expected to be breadwinners returning home covered in coal dust what exactly are we supposed to be? His answers are refreshingly practical, like being handed a map by someone who’s already spent a few years lost in the woods.
EVENT
Comedy Night feat Josh Widdicombe
This one-off comedy night on the 1st July in London is for dads and sons, costs a fiver and features Josh Widdicombe, Jack Skipper and free fries. That’s better value than most things currently available in Britain.
PODCAST
Adventure Diaries
Adventure Diaries somehow thought it was a good idea to hand me a microphone for an hour. Chris and I chatted about how deciding to cycle from London to Sydney led me to starting Outside Kids, so if you’ve ever wondered how I ended up here this just about covers it!
