I caught up with John a few months ago. He lives in London with his wife Katrien and their two boys, Jax (6) and Finn (4). They both juggle stressful consulting jobs, but make a point of flicking the switch and getting their gaggle into nature at weekends.

Wildlife has always been John’s thing. Before kids, he and Katrien were self-confessed amateur wildlife photography addicts, forever chasing the next encounter. Then Jax arrived, the cameras went in a drawer and the adventures gave way to a less exotic nocturnal creature.

Beyond the Backyard is what came out the other side: a newsletter and a promise to get their own family back outside. Every fortnight, John shares their adventures to help other parents do the same, with wildlife encounters that are often much closer to home than you’d think.
